Outrage over test questions given in a Mobile County Public School

Parents are calling the test given Friday racist and inappropriate. Now, the school system has placed 8th grade Burns Middle School teacher Joanne Bosler on paid administrative leave. Guns, drugs and sex are used in the word math problems. Number 3 says “Dwayne pimps 3 ho’s. If the price is $85 per trick, how many tricks per day must each ho turn to support Dwayne’s $800 per day crack habit.?”

“I was shocked because she’s a strict teacher,” said an 8th grader who took the test and didn’t want to be identified. “She was telling all her classes it was a joke. She was laughing along with them.”

But the test landed Bosler in the principal’s office. The school system says she was put on administrative leave Tuesday and “regrets what happened.”

Versions of the test has been circulating for years and has gotten other teachers in trouble. According to Snopes, “the Internet humor piece” dubbed the “The L.A. Math Proficiency Test… has been part of online lore since at least 1993.”

Parents we spoke with don’t find the test funny.

“It’s offensive and it’s not stuff I really want my 8th grader having to learn and read about in school, whether it’s a joke or not,” said a parent whose daughter took the test and did not want to be identified.

Jason Boyington’s son took the test. He said the questions were very offensive.

“He had to read it twice for it to sink in are they really asking me these kind of things,” said Boyington.

A fellow teacher who didn’t want to be identified told us Bosler was set to retire Wednesday and was “the epitome of a perfect teacher.”

“I think the ball got dropped on this big time,” said Boyington.

Bosler could not be reached for comment.
